Are Adventists Fundamentalists? w/ Nicholas Miller
Dr. Nicholas Miller tells the story of Adventism’s navigation through major interpretational shifts in the midst of 19th century America. After explaining the meaning of true “fundamentalism”, Dr. Miller points out the reason Adventists are not fundamentalists at their roots and why knowing is important. Also, he lets the listener know the potential pitfalls of a fundamentalist usage of the “plain reading of Scripture”.

Nick,
I just listened to your 2nd Podcast. Really great stuff and very well done, maybe one of the best things I’ve heard come out of the Adventist church. This kind of positive, critical questioning and thinking is so desperately needed. It seems in the normal culture of Adventism that cheerleading or positive generalities are so typically the norm and I have simply lost interest and my faith along with it.
I have come to believe that Adventism is too strong of a cultural faith that carries an inherent danger of thoughtless adherence to fundamentally unchallenged beliefs due to the strong cultural pressure so prevalent in its congregations…and I’m an introvert that cant stand going to church…which is no small thing.
I’m about 3 years in now on producing a documentary around loosing my faith and also starting a production company focusing on faith, justice and social issues. Its an invigorating process exploring and questioning the foundational truths of our existence, but skepticism is always there keeping you up at night, biting at your heels.
But yeah, just wanted to say I really appreciated your podcast. (although I do have some criticisms if your interested). I believe in this new age of global instant information connectivity that there will be a much stronger pull towards critical thinking, questioning and sharing of differing opinions. Over all it will be beneficial but I do think its going to drastically change the landscape of church and religion as we know it.
Sorry if this is a little of rocker, just got off a red-eye from LA.
Sincerely,
Trent Bell
Great stuff,as a church we need to hear more of this. There needs to be more listening and openness to conversation, especially from top down.
